Mental Health First Aid Training

What is Mental Health First Aid? Mental Health First Aid is an 8-hour course that gives people the skills to help someone who is developing a mental health problem or experiencing a mental health crisis. The evidence behind the program demonstrates that it does build mental health literacy, helping the public identify, understand, and respond to signs of mental illness.

How long does it take to participate in the course? The Mental Health First Aid course runs 8 hours and may be offered in a variety of formats. Most often, it isĀ provided in one day, or in two 4-hour sessions spaced over a short period of time.

What do you learn in the course? Just as CPR training helps a person with no clinical training assist an individual following a heart attack, Mental Health First Aid training helps a person assist someone experiencing a mental health crisis such as contemplating suicide. In both situations, the goal is to help support an individualĀ until appropriate professionalĀ help arrives.
